15. What was the first thing you ever contributed to a fandom?

Baby’s First (posted) Fic was an Owen/Ianto Torchwood fic posted to Livejournal when I was 19. It became the first of a fic series, which ended by breaking up the main couple, as nineteen-year-old me was pretty metal.

Also the fic took place in the break between seasons 1 and 2, and of course season 2 started with Jack returning and dragging Ianto back into his arms, which sort of necessitated breaking Owen & Ianto up.


16. Do you remember your first OTP? Who was in it?

My first OTP was Veronica/Logan from Veronica Mars. People have advanced MANY cogent critiques of this pairing over the years, mostly variations of the theme that Logan is not really boyfriend material, which I can’t really argue against, but consider: do you really think Veronica is girlfriend material? Do you really? These two human trainwrecks were made for each other! Let them light up the world together and take down crime through questionably legal means.

1 – How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?

The first fandom I wrote fic for was West Wing; I wrote one of my high school friends a Josh/Donna fic where aliens or possibly robots invade the White House and naturally it leads to Josh and Donna admitting their love for each other (although not in an Aliens Made Them Do It kind of way).

But the first fandom I actually posted fic for and made fandom friends in was Torchwood, in my freshman year of college. I mostly wrote Owen/Ianto fic about their totally dysfunctional relationship, although there was also a Jack/Ianto fic about how their relationship was totally dysfunctional, which was a less popular interpretation of their relationship than it was for Owen/Ianto. I think one of the things that drew me to Owen/Ianto, actually, was that even the fans thought it would be a trainwreck, and I do love fics about relationship trainwrecks.

I also liked the fact that the setting was such that anything could happen - one of my stories involved the team acquiring some pet brontosauruses, because why not - and the canon was, how shall I put this, unintimidating. I actually watched the show because I'd read some of the fic; if it had been the other way around, I doubt I would have gone looking for fic afterward.

Day 26 - OMG WTF? season finale.

Um, I’m still kind of mad about the finale of Torchwood’s second season. Yes, kill all my favorite characters, why don’t you! One of them for the second time.

Of course, this saved me from watching any of the later seasons of Torchwood, so really it’s probably just as well.

Psych always seems to end its seasons with weird serial killer episodes that are really quite at odds with the goofy mysteries Psych does for most of the rest of the season. Castle also seems to end on weird conspiracy episodes, rather than their more straightforward crime-fighting episodes that are really much better. Presumably both shows have some rationales for this, but it seems weird that they both like to round off their seasons with stuff they do poorly, rather than by reminding their viewers of the things they do well.

I went through my files of unposted and unfinished fanfic this weekend. Most of it remains in the bowels of my computer for a reason - Owen Harper as a rent-boy matador, what was I thinking? - but I found this fic, and I'm not sure why I never let it into the wild.

Today I bring fanfic recs, because I am in an expansive and giving mood but have nothing of my own to offer.

I have one last part to Tea and Sympathy to go. Specifically, I have the middle section of that last part to go, because I’ve already written the beginning and the end. I need the filling for the chocolate sandwich cookie.

I am not receiving cooperation in this endeavor. Owen and Ianto are, in their own separate ways, very, very against me.

Basically, both of them refuse to narrate the interior section. They’re also being vague and cagey about what exactly goes into the interior section, It’s some kind of summary of about a month of relationship between Owen getting better and Jack returning, but precisely what events it summarizes, and how?

Evidently, what happens in Cardiff, stays in Cardiff.

So, if anyone has any helpful thoughts, please share. I would really like to finish at least the first draft of this before I leave for Florida next Friday.
