Snowflake challenge #8: Create a wishlist.

-always and forever, fanart or fanfic for any of my books.

-more generally, links to cool fanart! I have no idea where to find it these days.

Canons I enjoy include Captain America (particularly interested in Natasha art right now, but always fond of Steve, Bucky, and/or Stucky), She-Ra, anything Rosemary Sutcliff, American Girl (SIDE NOTE, has American Girl considered partnering with Netflix to create American Girl miniseries about the historical girls, a la the Babysitters Club TV show? Just throwing the idea out there. It would be amazing)... Really I am not picky about fanart, if you think I will enjoy it you are probably right.

I also enjoy colored photos from the past, particularly if they were originally taken in color, like this 1909 Paris photoset.

In your own space, create some goals.

It feels a little optimistic to be making goals what with *waves hand at current events* everything, but [community profile] snowflake_challenge called and who am I not to answer?

I have two writing goals this year, one fannish and one not.

The fannish goal is to finish the Natasha fic [personal profile] kore commissioned in return for an ACLU donation (which offer will probably stand into perpetuity, given… *waves hand at current events again* Anyway, it’s a $25 donation for a fic of at least 1,000 words, larger donations are likely to result in longer fics although I make no promises). I have decided I need to rewatch The Winter Soldier before I write this. I really hope this will not engender a desire to write another quarter of a million words about Bucky Barnes, not least because that would interfere with my other goal this year…

…which is to finish two f/f novellas set at women’s colleges circa 1890-1910. There are other projects I would like to finish as well, but those are somewhat dependent on if/when I finish the necessary research, whereas the research for the college girls is not only DONE but has been DONE for a decade, ever since I wrote my college thesis on the topic of American girls’ literature from 1890-1915. I have kept reading books about this topic ever since, often with soft cries of “I could have used this in my thesis!”, and now at last it will get some use after all!

I couldn’t resist today’s [community profile] snowflake_challenge: In your own space, tell us who, from one of your fandoms, would you most want to have dinner with (or tea, or a random afternoon visit), And why? This could be a creator, an actor, a costumer, a set designer, a director, a character, a composer, anybody! What would you talk about? What are you dying to know?

This isn’t exactly one of my fandoms, but the person who pops to mind right now is Diana Wynne Jones. I’d like to have a tea party with her, preferably with a number of other interested guests, so at the psychological moment we could all pin her with our beady little eyes and demand, “So what’s UP with the ending of Fire and Hemlock, DWJ?” Surely under the pressure of our many eyes, she would have to spill.

Although possibly we might just learn that she didn't know either. Still, that at least would be something.

Talk about why you participated in Snowflake &/or what you got out of it.

I saw other people participating and it looked like fun. And it was! (Although I have inexplicably ended up two days behind.) There’s just something really nice about a bunch of people all posting about the same topics at roughly the same time - it’s a communal event, like a festival - "of going to the main square and drinking mulled wine and watching the sparkling lights and fireworks," as [personal profile] eglantiere described it.

In your own space, talk about what you think the future holds for fandom.

This is a particularly apt question this year, isn’t it, with fandom’s future platform still up in the air? I must say that Tumblr has collapsed less than I would have expected after Tumblrgeddon, but then, LJ didn’t collapse all at once after strikethrough either - so in the same way, this is probably only the beginning of Tumblr’s long slow end and there will be holdouts who stay there for years after most of fandom has left.

I’ve been enjoying the Dreamwidth renaissance, but I don’t expect that fandom will settle here as a whole: the image hosting is just not strong enough to support fanartists and gif makers. So we’ll see where that lands! I personally intend to stay here till the site explodes or the internet goes out, whichever comes first.

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

- publish a paperback edition of Briarley
- revise & publish Ashlin & Olivia
- revise the Civil War book, which still needs a title, must get on that.
- finish writing the other Civil War book, the one where one of Morgan’s Raiders comes back to a town he raided in hopes of marrying the girl who refused to let the raiders take her pig. Based on a true story!
- come up with an idea for a third Civil War book. I feel that they’ll do better if they’re a trilogy. Can I somehow work in the guy who was shot in the neck during the war and coughed out the bullet twenty years later? MAYBE.
- write the Little Red Riding Hood story, the one where the girl is a Russian peasant and the wolf is a student revolutionary who was cursed into wolf form by the fellow members of her revolutionary cell for suggesting that maybe selling their souls to the Devil might backfire.

This is probably enough writing goals to be getting on with. I would like to write some fanfic too (in fact, I’ve still got my Chocolate Box fic to write), but we’ll see where the spirit takes me on that one.

In your own space, create your own challenge.

Oh! Oh! This is so exciting, because I actually have a challenge idea!

Read a fic written in a fandom that is a movie directed by a woman. Extra challenge mode: leave a comment on the fic.

I’ve compiled a non-exhaustive list of fandoms on AO3. (I personally have written fics for Bend It Like Beckham, Cairo Time, and Om Shanti Om, in case any of those strike your fancy.)

1. Alias Grace (I realize this is technically a miniseries but I couldn't resist.)
2. Austenland
3. Belle
4. The Beguiled
5. Bright Star
6. D.E.B.S. (I haven’t seen this movie, but I mean to, especially now that I know it’s got seventy fics.)
7. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
8. Jupiter Ascending
9. Lady Bird
10. A League of Their Own
11. Little Women
12. Mamma Mia!
13. The Night Manager
14. The Secret Garden (1993)
15. Set It Up
16. The Spy Who Dumped Me
17. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (!!!! This one has a lot!)
18. Waitress
19. Winter’s Bone
20. Wonder Woman

Inevitably, I've gotten behind on Snowflake Challenge. Such is life, I suppose.

In your own space, talk about your creative process(es) — anything from the initial inspiration to how you feel after something’s done. Do you struggle with motivation or is it a smooth process? Do you have any tricks up your sleeve to pull out when a fanwork isn’t cooperating? What is your level of planning to pantsing/winging it?

It really depends. Sometimes my motivation is so high that I fling myself at the story every time I have a free moment, but sometimes (like right now) I dawdle about opening the document, let alone actually working on the story. (I need to start revisions of Ashlin & Olivia and… I have been procrastinating for going on two weeks.)

Generally when I start writing something I have a general idea how I want it to end (they get together, they don’t get together, whatever - just a guidepost) and often I know some events that are going to happen along the way, although I don’t necessarily where in the story it goes or why it’s important, just that I want it to be there. Often I’ll write the beginning and then I’ll jump forward to the scenes that I know and then I’ll fill in the bits in between.

I’ve also started keeping a character list at the beginning of documents for longer stories, mostly so I can keep track of locations and the minor characters. “What did I call that coffee shop they like? What’s her English teacher’s name? Did I give her a brother again?” Now I can just check my cheat sheet rather than scrolling through the document.

Create a fanwork.

Taking my inspiration from [personal profile] eglantiere here: leave me a prompt and I'll write you a ficlet!
osprey_archer: (writing)

In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created.

I thought I’d do some older fics for this one. Did you know that I’ve been posting on AO3 since 2010? That’s nearly ten years! Of course, I was posting fic on LJ before that - since 2008, I think? Man, I missed the chance to celebrate my tenth ficaversary. Oh well. Without further ado!

This first one is not exactly a fic, although I posted it for Yuletide (in fact this was a classic “sempai notice me!” moment: I admired the author’s fic and hoped that if I left an offering we could become friends. That time it didn’t work out, although sometimes it does.) It’s an f/f selkie story.

Sealskin (1486 words)
Fandom: Fairy tales and related fandoms
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Warnings: None
Relationships: girl/selkie
Characters: a human girl and a selkie
Summary: On Michaelmas Catherine first saw the selkie, who stood naked on the black wave-licked rocks at the bottom of the cliffs.

Next: baby’s first OT3 fic! Still probably the best OT3 fic I’ve written, IMO, although admittedly it doesn’t have a whole lot of competition.

Silentium (4101 words)
Fandom: Eagle of the Ninth - Rosemary Sutcliff
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: None
Relationships: Esca Mac Cunoval/Marcus Flavius Aquila/Cottia
Characters: Esca Mac Cunoval, Marcus Flavius Aquila, Cottia
Summary: Perhaps this feeling was only a thing of the moment, Esca thought, looking away from the sunlight limning Marcus and Cottia in gold. Tomorrow Cottia might be merely Cottia again, and again it would be only looking at Marcus that made him ache.

And finally, because it just wouldn’t be a good rec list of my fic of one of the pieces wasn’t a perfect sphere of despair, a Les Miserables fic in which Marius dies instead of Eponine and Eponine takes it upon herself to tell Cosette because she’s a Victor Hugo character and therefore loves self-punishment. (I personally would have preferred this - Eponine deserved better from life! - so it’s after the manner of a fix-it.)

Requiem (2475 words)
Fandom: Les Miserables (2012)
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences
Relationships: none
Warnings: Does it count as Major Character Death if the character dies before the fic starts? IDK.
Characters: Eponine Thenardier and Cosette Fauchelevent
Summary: Eponine trudged through the streets of Paris, the stinging scent of gunpowder still in her nose and blood still streaking her shirt, to tell Cosette that Marius was dead.

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

1. My dream has always been for someone to draw fanart or write fanfic for one of my original works (I think Briarley would be most amenable at this point, but I’m not picky), so… that. You’ve arrived as an author once your works get their own AO3 category!

2. I’d really like a copy of Shirley Jackson’s Hangsaman. Although possibly I should gift this one to myself through the magic of interlibrary loan.

3. Prompts! I love writing to prompts - whether fanfic or origfic. [personal profile] asakiyume once gave me a prompt about a time-traveling popcorn ball and she got a whole children’s book out of it (although obviously I’m usually not quite that prolific).
osprey_archer: (Default)

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them.

Oh! I actually just found a new Tumblr that I’ve really been enjoying: Soviet postcards, which posts not only postcards but advertisements, pins, newspaper photos, movie clips… all sorts of pieces of Soviet visual culture. It’s fun to see how similar sometimes Soviet and Western design looked, despite the Iron Curtain.

Another favorite is fuck yeah women film directors, a tumblr which posts mostly stills and gifs and occasionally reviews of movies directed by women. It’s such a great way to find new movies to watch - often if I like a gif enough to stop and look at it, that means that I’ll like the movie too. (Although sometimes this system is dangerous. I keep lingering over gifs from the Belgian horror movie Raw, which I know would give me nightmares for weeks - I’m no good at horror movies - but it’s just so eye-catching.)

I also like Modern Mrs. Darcy, the site where I get my yearly Reading Challenge, even though the site runner and I have very different tastes in books: she reviews a lot of contemporary adult fiction, which I very rarely read, but I enjoy reading her reviews even though I’m not familiar with most of the books.

Also, I like the link round-ups. There’s usually something fun, like this story about a book that sold after twenty-seven years on a used bookshop’s shelves, or interesting, like this article about why we should stop using the term women’s fiction, where author Liane Moriarty argues that the label “doesn’t make sense because women are the biggest readers of fiction. We should not be the sub category - men’s fiction should be the sub category because we’re the ones reading all the fiction.”

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc.) and explain why you love it so much.

Ugh this is such a hard choice! There are so many possibilities!

One of my favorite TV episodes ever is “Dear Mrs. Kennedy” in season two of The Crown, because I love that show (the sumptuous costumes! The beautiful sets! The wonderful acting! The history) and this episode is one of the best constructed and also the most well-designed to appeal to my id.

Which is certainly saying something in a show where there’s an entire episode revolving around whether Prince Philip will kneel to his wife during her coronation (he does) and another where he’s ordered to wear a tie with little hearts on it in order to show that he, unlike his buddy the womanizing jerk, is a good family man who loves his wife. And takes orders from her.

However, “Dear Mrs. Kennedy” is about Elizabeth’s relationship with Mrs. Kennedy, and I really like the way that it evolves over the course of the episode. At first she’s jealous because Mrs. Kennedy seems to embody all the things that she’s not: she’s brilliant and well-educated and witty, while Elizabeth is dull and stodgy and often ignorant.

But then they meet, and Elizabeth is bowled over by Mrs. Kennedy’s famous charm… only to learn later that not only was Mrs. Kennedy not charmed in return, but in fact she made fun of her at a dinner party later that week.

(Then Elizabeth goes to Ghana and causes a sensation by dancing with President Nkrumah, which is delightful in quite a separate way.)

And then! And then! Jack Kennedy tells his wife that Elizabeth has heard about her unkind comments (he thinks it’s hilarious and makes jokes about cat fights while Jackie sits petrified with horror), and next time the Kennedys are in London Jackie arranges a meeting at Buckingham Palace specifically so she can abase herself apologize (this does not involve kneeling in the show but I like to imagine that someday someone will write the fic where it does), which involves explaining that a doctor has been dosing both Jackie and Jack with shots of “vitamins” that are almost certainly amphetamines.

There’s something about this admission that just gets me - the fact that the Kennedys, one of the most powerful couples in the world, are at the mercy of this quack doctor, and the bravery of admitting something so potentially humiliating to someone who has good reason to be angry at her.

And they don’t exactly become friends after that, but there’s respect and understanding between them. At the end of the episode Queen Elizabeth is watching the news on the day Kennedy was shot, and Jackie is on TV still wearing her bloody clothes, and the Queen Mother thinks its because Jackie is distraught but Elizabeth understands - no - she’s wearing those bloody clothes on purpose: this is a political action, a cry for justice.

And it’s just so rare for relationships between women on TV to be so fraught, neither simple friendship nor straight-up enmity, but complicated and changing over time.

...also, I’m just saying, Jackie Kennedy kneels to the queen would be a great fic. The First Lady of the United States kneeling to the Queen of England - I’m sure Jackie would be alive to the painful political overtones even if this is a purely private act. The flush rising to her cheeks! The downcast eyes, the lowered eyelashes grazing her cheeks! And the queen sits in her chair, coolly sipping her tea.

Day 2: Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

once there was this girl who, The Spy Who Dumped Me, Morgan/Audrey. I may have recced this one before, but it’s great: I’m just in awe of its completely perfect Morgan voice. I can absolutely see Kate McKinnon doing this entire fic.

we’re so fancy & hella good hair, two fics (by different authors!) in the same universe Daredevil/Bad Blood music video crossover. My particular favorite part of these fics is the voice of the character Catastrophe (Taylor Swift in the music video), the most stable and evolved assassin ever, as she earnestly urges Matt to try a therapy cat. (Matt, meanwhile, tries to contain his jealousy about the fact that Catastrophe and her cohort are even better at destroying things than he is. They can punch their way through brick walls! Why can’t he punch his way through brick walls??)

Vincent van Gogh fanart. This one is something a little different. A couple of people watched Loving Vincent (a movie about Vincent Van Gogh animated with oil painting - the first movie of its kind) and it inspired them to try to copy one of Van Gogh’s paintings. The end result is pretty good, and the photos of the process make it look like such a fun project - it would be a fun thing to get together with friends to do.

Every year I mean to do the [community profile] snowflake_challenge and every year I do maybe one or two and then wander off into the wild blue yonder... but this year! Maybe this year will be my year.

Day 1: In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calm you or keep you sane.

Is this what we're using Happy Place to mean now? I always thought it referred to, like, an actual place - maybe a place that you imagine rather than a place where you physically go, but this makes it sound like it doesn't need to be a place at all and you can just be like "My happy place is a cup of hot chocolate."

Not a cafe where you get hot chocolate in a china mug with two fat marshmallows on top and a piece of shortbread on the saucer and you drink it sitting at a table made out of a reclaimed door. Not drinking hot chocolate while wearing a soft sweater in front of a roaring fire as fat snowflakes drift through the window and you know you don't have to go outside all day if you don't want to. Just the hot chocolate.

The snowflake_challenge graphic has given me hot chocolate on the brain, but to be fair hot chocolate is joyful and calming. I also like tea in this capacity, and I would like to welcome hot spiced cider into the fold but I can't seem to make it quite as delicious as I would like. Oh well. Maybe next year.

My happiest place is a comfy couch with a book and a blanket and a nice hot drink. The hot drink is an addition I have made in adulthood, but the rest of it has been basically my favorite place since I learned how to read.
osprey_archer: (window)
I have been meaning to do the snowflake_challenge for years, but I also forgot until the middle of January. But this year! This year [livejournal.com profile] egelantier's post reminded me, and so I am doing it.

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

1. Ficlets! I always like ficlets.

-Sutcliff fandom. I'm particularly fond of Lucius from Frontier Wolf, or fix-it Alexia/Jestyn/Anders from Blood Feud, or anything Bonnie Dundee.

-MCU. I am into most combinations of Steve, Bucky, Sam, and Natasha, shippy or otherwise. Actually, a fic where they all just hang out and have a pleasant afternoon might be nice. I could totally see Bucky insisting that they all watch The Matrix, and he and Natasha practically end up crawling under the couch because it hits so many of their paranoia buttons, but they refuse to turn it off because that would mean the movie wins. Okay, that's actually not a very pleasant afternoon after all...

- Agents of SHIELD. Simmons/Bobbie, Simmons/Skye, Skye/making ridiculous faces - okay, probably that would make more sense for fanart than a story. I feel like I could be into Fitz/Mack, but I'm leery about reading the fic because there are so many ways that could go wrong (chief among them bashing Simmons, who is my favorite. I probably would never get over her either if I was Fitz. Nonetheless, Fitz, you should work on that.)

2. Fic recs of any of these things! I think I've read most of the Sutcliff stories on AO3, but I know I've only skimmed the surface on MCU fics, and I'm not sure where to start with AoS fic.

3. Related works for my fics. I am especially partial to fanart or related fics (or ficlets), but podcasts and translations are glorious too.

I would also probably die of joy if someone wrote fic for my books, although I realize they are completely the wrong genre for that sort of thing. I would probably ship the characters with anyone they aren't actually related to, though. Just throwing that out there.
