Rain

It is a gray and dripping day. This is the first really rainy day I've had all trip - there have been days with brief cloud bursts, but no all-day rain - so really I shouldn't complain; but it is vexing, when my plan for the day was to wander the city and then write in the park, to realize that the city views will be truncated by my umbrella, and all the park benches will be soaked.

Until now, the sun has shown on the week. On Sunday we went to Karlstejn, a castle hidden in the folds of the mountains so that you don't see it till you're right on top of it; and yesterday we walked alongside the river through Prague, and stopped to see the Astronomical Clock. It has little clockwork figures which come out at the hour, and also the sculptures at the side of the clock dance. One of them is a skeleton, and it is rather startling to see it move.

Perhaps I will search out a pleasant cafe, or something of that kind. I could wander from cafe to cafe, changing from gelato to kolache to tea... Well, we'll see.

I had a really great hot chocolate once in Cafe Louvre - that's the one that's famous for being a haunt of both Einstein and Kafka - though I don't know if they ever tried the chocolate...

I find it hard to envision Kafka drinking hot chocolate. He seems more like an absinth kind of guy, somehow. Einstein, now...
