Meme from [livejournal.com profile] poeticknowledge!

1) If you could meet one author or historical figure (whether living or not), who would it be and why?
I'm always torn about questions like this, because on the one hand it would be awesome to meet, say, Jane Austen or Emily Dickinson. But I'm pretty sure Austen would be all, "You are insufficiently witty to be worth my time," and Dickinson wouldn't even come meet me, and that would be super depressing.

Maybe Zilpha Keatley Snyder - her books meant a whole lot to me when I was a child (I mean, they still do, but not as immediately) and I feel that she would be approachable.

2) If you could invite seven people to a dinner party (real or fictional) who would they be and why?
Honestly? I would probably gather together a bunch of my friends, who don't necessarily know each other but have a lot in common and therefore would probably like each other. Giving a dinner party for a bunch of illustrious strangers would probably give me vapors.

3) Who would you say has been the most influential person in your life? Why?
Definitely my parents. (No, I'm not going to pick just one.)

4) What is your most treasured possession?
If my house was burning down I would probably grab my laptop: not only is it the most expensive thing I own, but it holds all my photos and stories etc.

Though it would be painful letting my great-great aunt's copy of Anne of Green Gables burn.

And I'm going to give question 5, What are the top five most influential/life-changing movies/books you have seen/read? Why? it's own post, because I am totally unable to write short answers about books and movies.

Interesting answers! :) Some of them took me by surprise too (I expected you to choose some of your favorite fictional characters for the dinner party, but one of the beauties of memes are how unique and varied answers can be. :)), but in a good way! :) I also think it's interesting that you chose your laptop as your most treasured possession, though I shouldn't be too surprised given all that it can store. I'm looking forward to your answer to Question #5! :)

Fictional characters might be easier! But I think I'd want to invite a number of characters from the same book, rather than have to go through introducing everyone. It might be fun to invite Harry Potter characters, say: Harry & Ron & Hermione, of course, and maybe Luna and Neville, and...I can decide on the last two later.

It would be fun to meet Professor McGonagal, for instance, but I think her presence might inhibit the others.

A dinner party with Harry Potter characters would be awesome! I would love to invite Dumbledore as one of my guests. :) I bet he would be an interesting person to talk to!

I would also like five questions, please! :)

Agreed on the dinner party, but if I get to be a fly on the wall, I'd invite badass women from history.

But what if they didn't speak the same language? Or are we assuming they have some sort of Babelfish that makes it possible for them to talk?

I'm just not sure what, say, Eleanor Roosevelt would have to say to Eleanor of Aquitaine. They're both badass, but they don't have much in common otherwise, and I imagine that would be true for lots of other badass women of history. I don't imagine Joan of Arc and Elizabeth I would lose a lot of love for each other.

I'm assuming Babelfish.

I gotta admit, the Elizabeth I vs. Joan of Arc showdown could be pretty entertaining....

Sure, I like questions!

1. Which badass women from history would you invite to your dinner party?

2. If you could wave a wand and magically create a thriving fandom for one book or movie or TV show, which one would you pick? ("All of Sutcliff!" is insufficiently specific.)

3. What would your daemon be?

4. Dream home! What would it be like? What sort of place would it be?

5. If I were to write you one story, what would you want it to be about?

*g* Well, to #5, I would love it if you wrote a story about the officers in FW, hanging out and being themselves, maybe gossiping about their new commander.

From: [identity profile] osprey-archer.livejournal.com
I will file this away until I'm reunited with my copy of FW.

Wait, that last question doesn't really work as something for you to answer over on your journal. Teach me to answer comments late at night...

5. Best movie you saw this year? Or possibly favorite movie ever. Not picky.

Oh! And do you want five questions of your own?

Well, now I have a terror of meeting Jane Austen and having her refuse to talk to me because I wasn't witty enough. So thanks for that! However I'd absolutely grab my laptop as well. The idea of "backing up all my everything in the cloud" is nice, but then I'd only worry about the cloud disappearing.

If you are feeling the 5 Questions, hit me with some - though I'm out and about this weekend so it may be a few days.

No worries about the time. It will probably take me ages to get through the whole "five most influential/life-changing books/movies" thing.

1. Favorite American Girl, and why? (I have to feed my current obsession, after all.)

2. YA lit! Why is it so awesome?

3. If you could time travel, what era would you pick to visit?

4. Dream home! Or possibly dream location of home. Or maybe just dream room?

5. If you could wave a wand and magically create a thriving fandom for one book or movie or TV show, which one would you pick?

Zilpha Keatley Synder is still alive, so perhaps you *will* meet her. Her books were *very* influential on me, too. (VERY) And, I think she would be approachable. She is among the children's authors I wrote to in my youth, and among those who wrote back.

I keep meaning to write to her - I should get on that, as she must be getting on in years.

Somehow five-question memes don't seem quite your stye, but I'll ask anyway: do you want five questions?

I don't usually do them--if I do do them, it's usually just a reply in comments rather than on my own blog. I think I'll pass this time--though if you have *one* question I will answer!

One question! Excellent.

If we were to have a tea together, what theme would it be based around, and what kind of food, decoration, possible wicked schemes would that entail?

Date: 2012-12-30 05:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] asakiyume.livejournal.com
Oh! I'm going to run on instinct instead of careful thought and say that it will have to be a mad tea party, but not with sloppy switching of places and tormenting of dormice like in Lewis Carroll; rather, it will be be mad in that there will be questions and clues, and depending on answers given, different teas tasted and different cakes sampled, and the cakes will be fortune cakes with fortunes in them, and we will have this tea by candlelight** on the hottest night of summer, in an outdoor pavilion swathed in gauze to keep out mosquitos, so we can listen to the crickets without fear of bloodsucking harassment.

**tiny tea lights put in mason jars and suspended from a birch bough brought into our pavilion for this purpose.

Date: 2012-12-30 02:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] osprey-archer.livejournal.com
Oh, that sounds splendid! I imagine the cakes on plates with little domed covers, which open by clockwork when we answer the questions.

The pavilion will look like a lantern from the distance. I wonder if it will guide a traveler to us?

Date: 2012-12-31 02:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] asakiyume.livejournal.com
Ooh, I like this! Maybe the traveler who comes will be a polisher and cutter of bronze, come to do maintenance on the domed covers of the plates. We welcome him--or her--and then this person tells us tales of the other gears and pistons they've repaired.

It will all lead to an adventure!
