Next Monday I’m going on a road trip. I'm tremendously excited, but also mildly worried: my high school friend Emma and I are visiting my college friend Dorothea. Emma and Dorothea have met for a sum total of ten seconds at a fencing tournament.

Given that Emma and Dorothea hardly know each other, it’s entirely possible that the vacation will devolve into us sitting uncomfortably in ice cream parlors, chewing slowly through melting mounds of mint chocolate chip and orange sherbet as we stare at each other at each other in awkward silent agony.

I really would rather not have that happen, but my conversation-fu is limited. They’ve both read Tortall, so a George-Jon-Neal-Numair-Taybur death match could probably provide conversation fodder for days. Or a Cleon-slagging tournament.

Or maybe I should take along a book of origami patterns? Or cards. Or something. Probably it will work out; they have a lot of things in common beyond fencing and Tortall. Crown Duel. The Sabriel books. Me!

...maybe I’ll hunt down the origami book.

I'm sure it will be fine! It might be awkward for like 2 seconds, but it will pass and everyone will have lots to talk about.

Do you fence?

I don't fence, because one of the co-captains of the fencing team at school views life as a gladiatorial arena. He once explained to me, very proudly, that he'd arranged the fencing team along Machiavellian lines: he'd set his co-captain up to be blamed for anything that went wrong. In his head the entire team is divvied up into opposing armies (with him, or with co-captain?) and he has sufficient strength of personality to impose this vision on the entire team.

When he and Dorothea discuss fencing team politics, it sounds like they're living in a cross between a World War II movie and Mean Girls. The team is on the verge of interpersonal disaster ALL THE TIME. I just can't love epee enough to sacrifice my soul to that sort of atmosphere.

Sorry, you probably didn't want an essay. I just find him terribly exasperating, and once I start it's hard to stop.

hmmm....yeah, it's probably best to stay clear of those kinds of atmospheres.

Yeah, I really went kind of crazy on that answer; you probably would have been happy with just a "no."

It's just that I was planning to start fencing when I started college, and I'm a little bitter because it didn't work out.

I'm sorry that it didn't work out for you!

I don't fence, but I tend to look at the sport through romanticized glasses. I'm looking forward to the Olympics and some grade A fencing!

Thank you. I really like that icon--the artist's model catching a cloud.

Thanks! I love it too. I found some beautiful new icons at [livejournal.com profile] jillicons the other day.

How far are you going to be driving? And from where to where?

We're driving from Indiana to Iowa, approximately seven hours of wide, flat cornfields and a lot of sky.

We're leaving early Monday and we should be back late on Wednesday. After that, I should be mostly staying put for the rest of the summer.
