Happy Birthday to Dad, and Shopping
Jul. 11th, 2008 05:50 pmToday is my father's birthday. He's old enough now that he gets cagey about his age (doesn't want us young whippersnappers to think he's going senile yet), but it's more than twice the thirty-one fish he caught this morning.
***
I used to throw temper tantrums whenever my mother took me shoe shopping.
I grew out of that, but I still find it hard to believe that anyone finds the activity pleasurable. The shoes that are pretty don’t fit (shoe manufacturers evidently believe that pretty shoes that are also comfortable are, if not illegal, at very least immoral), and the shoes that fit aren’t pretty.
As a general rule, any shoe that’s supposed to be worn without socks is an art object first and a utilitarian foot covering fourth or fifth. Second and third are “torture device” and “podiatrist’s demonic lovechild”; the optional fourth is “fetish piece.”
This is true even of my supposedly practical sandals. I have blisters. OW.
***
On the other hand, I also went book shopping, which was much more satisfying. I got the The Hero Strikes Back, which turns out to be the sequel to something, so I have to hunt down the first book in the series because I’m just anal-retentive like that.
Speaking of books: paper art made out of books. On one hand: BOOK DEFACEMENT. Send in the cavalry!
But on the other hand—SO pretty.

Date: 2008-07-12 03:43 pm (UTC)I'll probably post a review when I'm done with the book; right now I'm waiting for the library to come through with the first book in the series.
