You guys! You guys! Here is a website of pictures of adorable baby animals!

You may want to save it for a stressful day. Because it will melt you into a puddle of cute.

Also, a meme: Name a character I've written about, and I will tell you three things that I think are essential to keep in mind when writing that character.

Awwww! I think I have seen that before, perhaps. Here is one for you in video form:

For the meme: Ned!

BABY TURTLE!!!!

Oh, gosh, Ned. I kind of fail at writing Ned, which is why all my Pushing Daisies fics suck, but I'll give it a go.

1. Secretive is Ned's middle name. Or possibly his first name, and he goes by his middle name. He's spent most of his life with an unsharable secret and no one to tell it to anyway, so he doesn't trust easily.

2. That said, and contrary to poor Olive's hopes, his quiet exterior does not cover hidden reserves of love. (Pain, maybe. Love, no.) Not because he doesn't love but because he doesn't hide it; if he likes you, he'll tell you, even though it will feel like ripping his still-beating heart out, because Ned is a brave little toaster.

3. But, although brave in his honestly with those he loves, Ned can be a total chicken in other ways - chief among them his unwillingness to form new attachments (you notice the love of his life is a girl he met before he had any secrets) or risk losing those he loves (his refusal to tell Chuck's aunts she's alive).

And yet he does risk losing Chuck. It's the tension in his character that makes him so interesting: his secretiveness combined with his bare honesty, and his alternating bouts of fear and courage.

Chuck is an interesting contrast because she is, comparatively, such an uncomplicated person. (Except that's only comparative. She is complicated, but its not as obvious.)

You do not fail at writing Ned!

All good points! Especially the bit about tension in his character. He is naturally so earnest that he's probably afraid he's going to slip up and reveal his secrets at any moment.

Perhaps fail at writing Ned was a little strong. But I've never managed to write a Pushing Daisies fic that really captured the way I feel about the show, which is really frustrating, because its the sort of show I can usually write - the characters have the right kind of conflicts.

I think part of it is that I never quite got a handle on writing Chuck. I couldn't figure out her hook. Perhaps I should write one of these things about her & see if that helps...

Now I want to write more Pushing Daisies fic. No! Do not have time! There is no fandom!!!

Sounds to me like you really need to write a 5 things for Chuck... come at her from 5 different angles to see if you can find the right one. ;)

1. She's a horrible person. You'd think this wouldn't be hard to remember - it's in her name! - but it's hard to resist the urge to soften her up a little, make her a little more sympathetic, because it's painful to read (or write) about a thoroughly horrible person.

2. Part of the reason she's such a horrible person is that she really doesn't get other people. She tries to control them through threats, blackmail and bribery because she doesn't have the social skills to create any more functional relationship.

This makes her, if not sympathetic, understandable, which obviates any desire to soften her up.

3. She's a monomaniac. Her obsession of the moment should be mentioned early and often.

Fascinating! Thank you! What you say about her not getting other people and how this fact makes her sympathetic, etc.--is so true. And I agree! You don't want to soften her.

I love your insights.
