That conflict *is* something that's in the book, but it's also kind of a meta-question about reader reactions to the book. Do readers sympathize with the characters they are most emotionally connected to, or the characters whose abstract moral principles they agree with? Obviously it depends on the reader, and perhaps also the work in question, but I think there are general trends.
