It doesn't even manage to either a) achieve complete tragedy or b) suggest that he and/or his therapist think he's cured or could be cured. It's just sort of a peculiar mix of dreary and inexplicably upbeat.
It's the kind of ending spatch and I refer to in movies as "and then we ran out of film."
