IIRC there's a bit more information known about the medieval book - it was based on a specific historical figure - but not one that I knew, so his name has slipped my mind. Perhaps for the best! Otherwise I'd probably be reading Wikipedia articles about him and sighing, "Oh, this guy seems like a fantastic subject for a Mary Renault novel, if only she'd had just a bit more time to finish it... or hadn't told Julie Mullard to burn the manuscript, because it was apparently almost done!"
