Everything I know about Southworth comes from Wikipedia, which tells me that four years after their marriage her husband left her (and their two children) and went to Brazil to hunt for gold. And then I guess he just stayed there, ne'er to return? Who can say! At any rate Southworth supported herself and her sons single-handedly after that.
