Drive-by Maeve Binchy fan, I love Circle of Friends, it's my favourite of all her novels that I've read. Benny is such a warm-hearted character it's just really nice to spend time with her and see her life getting bigger and her self-confidence growing. And Nan's actions aren't sympathetic, but her story as a whole is because we see where she's coming from, so at the end when she has a miscarriage and gets to start a new life the reader waves her off without rancour. Especially given that ultimately Benny is OK and can see Jack as a loss, but also a lucky escape. I just think it's such a good book.
