Not only does she miscarry, but she miscarries because Benny's best friend Eve realizes that Nan deliberately entrapped Jack and did it in Eve's cottage (which is mostly abandoned while Eve is away in Dublin for university; perfect for trysts!) and goes after Eve with a knife! Eve falls in her attempt to get away, cuts herself badly on broken glass (did she break a window in her hurry to escape? The finer details are escaping me...), nearly bleeds to death, and loses the baby as a result.
Upon reflection, this storyline might be worthy of a telenovela.
I think living with that decision might have worked out okay for Nan... if Jack never realized the baby wasn't his. But at some point he would surely realize the math didn't add up? Or his father the doctor would figure it out!
