How many books can there be with giant manta rays hunting the protagonist, I ask, aware even as I say it that it 100% sounds like a plucky sea adventure trope. Perhaps not as common as sharks hunting the protagonist!
The manta ray gets away in this one, which pleased me. It doesn't get its pearl back but it DOES drown the baddie.
