Some of Austen's books can be enjoyably read as romances, but Austen herself turns a jaundiced eye toward romance. Her books are littered with people led astray because they believed themselves "in love," only to realize that they were merely in lust and really find their partner unbearable! But TOO LATE, now they are bound together for life.
