I'm not sure how much this was a pattern and how much it was Brownie-specific because he didn't intend to get a dog in the first place. After all, it was the amount of attention that he was paying to his beloved goshawk that sent Brownie into a decline in the first place!
However, he did lose the goshawk - one does get the sense that he expected to lose everyone and everything and romanticized the pain of it because otherwise it was unbearable. But with Brownie he somehow made the emotional leap to fighting to keep her alive, and in doing so managed to create a secure attachment with her that he never managed with anyone else.
