This is the theory that animates many of these stories: most people, most of the time, consider the customs of their society natural, instinctual, right. --And I'd add that as changes become established, society's narrative is that we've improved: how much better it is with the change. It sounds from your description like the stories are playing with that too: what if something became a norm which you, dear reader, found horrifying?
What your description of "Two's Family" made me think was how people really want to categorize people and how uncomfortable they are when people's situations are uncomfortable. Like you say: lesbianism may not be super-approved-of, but at least it's a category with rules, and dammit, those women aren't adhering to them!
