This kind of criticism is still around, although to a certain extent it's been replaced by criticism that demands characters should display healthy relationship dynamics and a nuanced, intersectional understanding of their privilege at all times. (This is especially fun when you and the author disagree about what constitutes a "healthy relationship dynamic.") I mean sure fine that's a thing literature can do I guess, but some books are The Secret History and watching these totally-unaware-of-their-privilege dumbbells act out their unhealthy relationship dynamics is the point.
