I think I should have grasped that "doctor who performs illegal abortions" (and botches them!) would NOT have been considered a sympathetic character trait by many readers in 1912, and then it would have been less surprising when Dr. Harpe went to the bad later on, but so it goes! Definitely interesting that Lockhart portrays Dr. Harpe as quite popular in the town until the fact that she's a skinflint who pickpockets the patients gets around.
