Stylistically it feels much more recent than it is: if I hadn’t gone into the book knowing it was written in the 1930s, I might have guessed the 1990s, or even more recent.
Have you read much Naomi Mitchison? I am thinking of The Delicate Fire (1933), which rushthatspeaks reviewed for his year-long book-a-day project; Erick Berry sounds in the same tradition.
