I was sitting a room with my parents when I read this, and told them about it. My dad initially refused to believe it, and started concocting theories that maybe more gay men went to photographers! I'm in Sweden, not the US, and I'm not sure what 19th century gender roles looked like here compared to the US, but he is definitely of an era where male friends did not show physical affection...
