Somehow it does feel very Renault! But I wish we had her opinions on a few less lugubrious lesbian novels written by women to compare. There's an element of self-pity in The Well of Loneliness that I feel must have pushed her buttons.

I have to say I was quite disappointed with the movie Sylvia Scarlett, because it seemed to feel very awkward about its own queerness in a way that Queen Christina, for instance, didn't. I mean, Queen Christina is definitely straightwashing the titular character, so it's not like it's a bastion of enlightenment, but you feel that the movie is at least really enjoying cross-dressing Katherine Hepburn.
