It is a rather interesting/weird phenomenon. I wonder if it was simply due to the nature of WWII, or if it maybe had something to do with technological advances and how you could so much more easily spread information/propaganda (and thus influence the general culture) through film and radio. A question for a more learned person than I, no doubt!
I think it comes down to whether "The adaptation choices here are FASCINATING, but not in a way that adds up to a good movie" is a viewing experience you enjoy.
That definitely helps with the decision-making process! I've certainly enjoyed my fair share of very-flawed-yet-fascinating pieces of media, so I think I'll put it on the back-burner for now and wait until I'm in the proper mood. And maybe just go take a peek at Rossano Brazzi as Hot Young Professor Bhaer in the meantime, hah.
