It's interesting that they felt this in the aftermath of World War II, when LMA clearly didn't feel it writing just after the Civil War. John Brooke does eventually join up, but beforehand no one is going "There is a WAR ON, young man, why are you wasting your time as a tutor?" And no one ever suggests that Laurie ought to join up, even though lots of boys did join the Union Army underage.
It's hard to say if you'll find the 1949 Little Women worth viewing. It's not without charms: June Allyson is a charming Jo, and Rossano Brazzi is a delight as Hot Young Professor Bhaer. And "Wow, they certainly made Choices in their portrayal of Amy!" has a certain fascination. (I also couldn't get over the fact that Laurie, whatever they say about his age, is very obviously twenty-five.)
I think it comes down to whether "The adaptation choices here are FASCINATING, but not in a way that adds up to a good movie" is a viewing experience you enjoy.
