Apparently they felt that viewers just couldn't take them seriously as romantic prospects if these able-bodied young men were NOT in uniform.
It was definitely a Thing at the time. There's an almost-throwaway line in Laura (1944) about how Det. MacPherson previously got caught in a gang shoot-out and now has a "silver shin-bone," and I remember reading/hearing somewhere that the filmmakers had to add that detail in just to give some reason as to why the character wasn't fighting in WWII.
I've never really had the urge to watch the 1949 version of Little Women (as it is considered the weakest), but the prospect of Hot Young Professor Bhaer is tempting me to change my mind??? Do you think it's worth it, or should I just go looking for screencaps?
