May really did go to Europe to study art, although IIRC after Little Women was published; it was the proceeds from the novel that made that course of study possible. So clearly she wasn't TOO discouraged by the fact that Louisa thought she had talent but not genius!
At some point I should poke around to see if there's a sort of Alcott sister biography which details the life stories of all four of them...
