I know that I read Strawberry Girl in my youth, and maybe another one Lenski wrote about life on a working houseboat? I don't remember anything about them unfortunately! But it's cool that she actually lived with those communities to research for those books.
I think the engagements are special to the Best Friends series (each of the three books ends with two of the adult characters pairing off!) but the running away (often accompanied by near-fatal illness, although SOMETIMES there is just near-fatal illness on its own...) is definitely a boarding school staple!
