It was Beth's shyness - the part where she's trying to go over to the Laurence's house and actually turns back three times because she's too shy to go in. I feel like a lot of books have a "shy" character who is actually more or less indistinguishable from the non-shy characters so it was nice to see Beth actually shying away from something.
