Yes, I think it would definitely hit differently if that's your character introduction! I had an entire book to get used to Gen's basic invincibility, so when book 2 started with that invincibility getting blown to smithereens I was all "WTF WTF WTF." (Or whatever the equivalent is from a sheltered 12-year-old.)
I love the ending scene - their rapprochement there is beautiful - but I wasn't totally sold on the pairing till King of Attolia. And, to be fair, I'm not sure they're totally sure it's going to work till then either. That last scene in QoA is the moment when Attolia and Eugenides realize, "Okay, MAYBE this isn't just one of Gen's trademarked stupid plans," and then they build from there.
