My laptop is drifting toward decrepitude, and I have decided for once in my life to replace an electronic item before it becomes actually unusable.

I have also decided that it's time to leave the Mac universe. When I got my first laptop lo these many years ago it made sense to buy an Apple, because at the time I was still in my movie-directing phase and Apple had the reputation for having the best movie-editing software, but time has gone by, my hobbies have changed, and now I mostly use the computer for the internet and word processing, which I'm sure can be done on a cheaper machine than a Mac.

The cheapest Apple laptop right now is $1000, so I'm hoping to get lower than that. However, in December I'm getting a $500 bonus at work AND my first month royalties for The Larks Still Bravely Singing, which at last broke the four-digit barrier! my first four-digit royalty month! WEALTH BEYOND MY WILDEST DREAMS OF AVARICE!!! so I have a little money to play with.

So I have two orders of business.

1) Most of my music collection is currently on my computer in iTunes, so before I can replace the computer, I need to put the music on some sort of MP3 player or whatever people store their music on these days. I want to be able to use it in my car, which does not have a headphone jack, but does have a USB port and one of those cigarette lighter charger ports.

2) I also need to decide what kind of laptop to get. It doesn't necessarily need to have Word on it, because I started using LibreOffice (which is like Word, but free online) after my ancient version of Word proved unable to cope with Honeytrap. I don't play computer games, so the computer doesn't need to have enormous processing power. Probably the most biggest drain on its memory will be streaming the occasional movie.

I write this down partly as a to-do list for myself, but also in the hope that some of you may have advice. Please share your advice on MP3 players that will cheerfully play iTunes files and cope with the lack of a headphone jack, and/or thoughts about which laptop I should get!

How much music (gigabyte -wise) do you have? I think you might be able to put in on a flashdrive and listen to it in the car that way (I remember someone at work mentioning doing this after they realized their new car didn't have a CD drive).

I'm very curious what people's advice is re: mp3 players - especially since mine is circa 2010 and I’m running a 2012 version of iTunes (mostly because I hated the subsequent versions’ interface and at this point I kinda doubt my iPod will work with an updated version).

Hurray for RICHES and figuring out laptop specifications!

I've got a desktop PC which I'm happy with, so no help there.

I have no good advice! I hope the purchase works out, though.

In other news, I put a letter in the mail to you!
