Curiously, 19th century American women actually had much more latitude to continue their intense romantic friendships after marriage - they continue to write really gushing letters to each other etc., which men tended to stop doing after marriage. Obviously there's still a difference in terms of "how much time do you have to hang out with your friend when you both have ten children," but I think practical difficulties fall into a different category than You Must Drop Your Friends Because Society.
