The book would be probably 200% less stressful if Pete were even VAGUELY aware that he was in terrible danger. But no! He is walking into it ABSOLUTELY BLIND and it's only luck that saves him. There was a part where he tells his best friend Rufus about his plan and I was like "Oh thank God, now Rufus will tell a responsible adult," but guess who does NOT tell a responsible adult? Guess who just decides to hide so he can catch a last glimpse of Pete as he leaves town, only instead he has to comfort Pete because he didn't get to run away with the Preacher Man? BOTH OF YOU. MY GOD.
The preacher I can only assume crisscrosses America, finding spiritually minded teenagers to seduce and/or abandon at the last minute. They are all too embarrassed and in love with him to tell anyone so he is never caught.
