The plot summary in your second paragraph reminded me a lot of Genevieve Hudson's Boys of Alabama, although it goes...... very different places from there. And the teenaged protagonist is a necromancer.
There is something especially !!! about books written for a younger audience that just set off ALL THE ALARM BELLS when you read them as an adult; it's like "no...... this is for kids......... they wouldn't go there, would they? ..........would they??"
