Yeah, that suggestion of a 'fated' ending involving the death of one character followed by a swerve where something else happens instead seems to be a favourite tactic of Broster's—Sir Isumbras at the Ford does something similar. I love the sense of fate and inevitability-despite-unexpectedness in FotH.
I can just see Old Angus solemnly repeating the prophecy to Ewen and then adding 'each of the meetings will be EXTREMELY DRAMATIC'. :D
I’m also extremely curious how people write fic for this canon, given that half the pairing dies at the end, and almost every minute of their five fated meetings is accounted for
This was also something that puzzled me when I started trying to write fic. But we worked it out in the end! I agree with luzula's fic recs above, and would add hyarrowen's An Ally Better than the Sidhe, which is canon divergence with a supernatural twist... and about everything else in the tag, there is some really good fic for this fandom. :D
