Star Wars is a good one for this. I remember being like "WHY" when Kylo/Hux got popular, but then a friend was going on about their mutual loathing of maddening Imperial bureaucracy being so powerful that it overcame their mutual antagonism against each other, and although it will never be my favorite thing, I could see it after that.
