Lilo and Stitch

The problem with deciding that you’re going to rewatch all the Disney animated films and write about every single one of them is that sometimes you hit a film you just don’t have much to say about, and for me, Lilo and Stitch is such a film. I know a lot of people love this movie, and I was hoping that this rewatch would be the time for me to fall in love with it too.

But instead it was just… fine. It was fine the first time I watched it and it’s still fine now, but it never sets my heart on fire and I don’t know why.

Not all movies can be all things for all people. The fact that it's fine for you means that it doesn't do anything particular to annoy you ... it just doesn't elevate itself in any particular way, I guess.

Do you have a Disney film that you really love that a good number of your friends are merely meh on? The contrast might be interesting. Looking at what it was about such a film that really lit your fires but didn't light theirs might give you insight into why Lilo and Stitch couldn't rise beyond It was fine for you.

I think that most of my positive Disney opinions are pretty common, alas! Beauty and the Beast, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, Frozen... There's just this period in the early aughts when Disney got all experimental in their films, and in theory I'm all about experiments! (And, I mean, I love Fantasia, and that film is one big experiment that really shouldn't work!) But in practice I feel pretty meh about all the early aughts films.
