A year ago today, the library announced that it was going to close down on account of Covid-19. This was the moment that really brought the crisis home to me - not that I hadn’t noticed the crisis incoming, but that was the moment when I felt, Oh, it’s here - and I felt I ought to mark the anniversary somehow, so I’ve baked a pound cake. The recipe said to bake it in advance and give it a day or two to mature, so after two days of waiting I’m absolutely wild to know what a properly matured pound cake tastes like.

I’ve also been trying to think of something profound or at least vaguely interesting to say about One Year Into the Pandemic, but honestly, what is there left to say? What has not already been said about the pandemic ten million times before? This past twelve months have been A Lot. Hopefully the next twelve will be better.

When they told us the library would close I went directly there and signed out fifty books more or less at random.

God I'd like to meet a truly mature pound cake

I hope your matured pound cake is delicious and your wishes for a better next 12 months come true. I'm coming up on my own 'Oh, it's here' anniversary - it's a strange feeling, and as you say, hard to really comment on without feeling trite. But I think your commemorative baking approach has lots of merit!
