Yeah, that makes sense. I wish there had been just a little more to confirm he lives before the "We're going to see Daddy" line - even something like a sentence or two about someone stanching the bleeding from the bullet wounds would have helped, so you don't have that brief "Are they walking into the snow to die...?" moment.
