Jeb willed the diary to his niece, who edited it and had it published in the early nineties. Jeb actually died in the 1960s - the diary cuts off at 1945 because the niece felt that the diaries basically got too sad after that, just Jeb puttering around never writing his novel and presumably continuing to pine fruitlessly after Dash.
