This is also really interesting because IIRC in the Phaedrus, there's all that discussion of the lover and the beloved, and the lover wanting the best for the beloved, and how the love of the beautiful can either lead to sex (degrading) or contemplation of the beautiful, &c &c. Socrates famously resisted Alcibiades' advances and I think Renault is thinking of that, but the ending with the image of the black and white horses reconciled in sleep is Ralph and Laurie, and doesn't have anything to do with Andrew.
