To be fair, an awful lot of these books are written by African-American authors: Walter Dean Myers, Mildred Taylor, Kwame Alexander, Christopher Paul Curtis etc etc etc. I think in this case what's happening is a mismatch between what publishers and (often) parents want children to read - historical suffering, that'll be educational! - while children go "But ray guns tho :("
