This TV series crushed me as a child because it was so completely unlike the books. I saw about one episode before revolting against not merely this particular show
NOT JUST ME THEN
My parents were amused when I literally ran out of the room rather than watch that thing. So terrible! So hokey! It was like the awful Waltons series (which my dad, who grew up during the Depression, loudly derided whenever it came up) but with Michael Landon. UGH.
NZ books! If I remember rightly, people I know really liked Margaret Mahy, The Tricksters and The Changeover. I think those can be hard to get tho. There's a series of books by Fleur Beale, more recent, about girls trapped in a religious cult: I Am Not Esther, I Am Rebecca, and Being Magdalene (okay I realize this is a weird rec, but I have a mild cult fixation. I also read some nonfic books about Gloriavale, but moving on....) I remember hearing about Bone Tiki and other books by David Hair, but I never read them. (I thought Jellicoe Road might fit here, but no, it's an Aussie book.)
Janet Frame is probably my very favourite NZ author, but she didn't write children's books or YA. Her autobiography about growing up in NZ is amazing, tho, and was the basis for the film An Angel At My Table (1990), directed by Jane Campion -- I think you saw that one? If you haven't, it's amazing. //helpful
