It probably says a lot about me that I'm actually much more interested in reading this now that you've described it so vividly (up until now I've mostly been familiar with Baldwin's essay work), though I have a feeling I'd find it just as difficult going. It sounds pretty mercilessly clear-eyed about its protagonist's emotional state and how that affects everyone around him.
