I actually love that book, mostly because I tend to pretend that the last fifth of the book or so (the SECRET POISONING part) doesn't exist; the first four-fifths are such a good evocation of what it's like to be a lonely teenager. But it would have been a better book if someone had suggested, preferably early in the planning process so it wouldn't require too many changes, "What if we didn't have the secret poisoning? What if we just wrapped up this story without a gigantic poisoning conspiracy at all?"
