You may be more informed on this subject than I am, but as far as I can tell there's a gap between what nineteenth-century people wrote into their novels and how they actually acted. I don't want to spoil several George Eliot books for you so I won't go into detail but suffice it to say there aren't very good options there for women whose maidenly honor was even slightly besmirched--but George Eliot herself openly lived with a man who was married to another woman for much of her life.
(I do like George Eliot's books an awful lot though)
