I find it telling that in the section you quote, Don Ippolito says "you would find no singleness in me"--i.e., he wants to be seen as an individual--whereas Ferris comes back with "I am of another race from you"--i.e., falling back on group membership to evade personal responsibility for his feelings and actions. And you don't think he's meaning Florida when he says "the same deceit"? You would know, because you've read the whole story and have the complete context and characters in your mind, but based on this one quote in which Ferris clings to his racial identity as an excuse, I'd bet he'd be quite happy to call on misogyny as a further way to weasel out of his uncomfortable situation.
