I can't remember if I ever read any Vivian Alcock (I think I did once and found it opaque and confusing), but I used to look at them curiously a lot growing up and wonder if I would like them if I found the courage, but I think the opaque one put my off. The Monster Garden sounds rather great, though.
(I was a very nervous young reader. I mainly stuck to Enid Blyton and then one day I read a marvellous book called I LIke This Story by the legendary Puffin editor Kaye Webb, which was just a collection of extracts from 50 children's books and then further recommendations by Kaye Webb for other books I might like if I liked those and I followed up those leads like it was the Book Bible and I have no regrets. But I don't think there was a Vivian Alcock extract, although she might have been in the recommendations which was why I was curious.)
