It never occurred to me that there might be anything between Christopher and Elliot either. Obviously Elliot just kind of moved into the McCall house and stayed because... why not, I guess! Who wouldn't want to live in the McCall house if they had the chance?
I think kids these days (at least in some places) are more noticing about these things: I've been reading The Boxcar Children with some fourth graders I work with and we got to the part where the book says something like "James Alden liked boys. He liked to see them running and jumping" and the kids were like WHOA (I'm not sure if they were getting "James Alden is gay" or "James Alden is a pedophile"), so I had to explain that in 1940 when the book was published that meant something totally different.
