I haven't read any of the short stories, but I have noticed in other detective short stories that there's often a noticeable shift in atmosphere and sometimes characterization, maybe because the mystery needs to be solved so fast? No time for ponderous deliberations. Lots of temptation to have murderers who confess in a swift and lurid manner.
