So much depended on the family, right up until . . . well, when I was born, the two families had a hasty "party" before Christmas to celebrate the runaway marriage that took place "the summer before" and ever after my parents celebrated their wedding anniversary in July. Though actually that was when my twenty one year old dad, already on his second marriage (brief, to give the still-unmet half-sister a name) got my high school aged mom pregnant. Both families closed around the two and lied like rugs about when that marriage really took place.

Occasionally a family did expel a daughter (never a son) and it became a cause celebre, in which case many girls moved elsewhere, put a ring on their fingers, a black dress on, and claimed to be a war widow, complete with new name.
